What joining The Operator means

Membership Terms

These are the terms of membership, including how the subscription works, what you are told before you pay, and how to cancel. Read alongside Privacy and Online safety & moderation.

1Who this is for, and how you join

The Operator is a paid membership reached by application, not open sign-up. Submitting an application does not create a contract or a right to join - we assess every application and may decline it without giving a reason, most often because we do not believe the room is the right fit for what you are trying to do.

A contract exists once your application is approved and your first payment is taken, not before. Nothing in your application, or in anything said to you before that point, is a promise of membership.

2Before you pay: what you are told, and when

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you are entitled to see certain information before you enter a contract with us, not buried afterwards. Before payment is taken, the checkout page states, in plain terms and in one place:

  • The price you will be charged today, in full, including any tax.
  • What the subscription includes, and how long the introductory period (if any) runs before the ongoing rate applies.
  • That the subscription renews automatically, and on what cycle.
  • How to cancel, and that cancelling stops the next renewal rather than ending access you have already paid for.

If any of that is not visible on the checkout page as it stands today, that is a defect in the checkout page, not a change to this term - the page is required to match this clause, not the other way round.

3Automatic renewal, and the reminder you get

The membership is a recurring subscription and renews automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel first. We do not spring a renewal on you silently:

  • You are emailed before any renewal that changes what you pay, or before the first renewal after an introductory rate, with enough notice to cancel before you are charged.
  • Every receipt states the plan you are on and when it next renews.
  • You can see your next renewal date at any time by logging in and checking your account.

4Price

The price and billing structure shown at checkout is being finalised and is not repeated here. This document describes how pricing must be presented once it is confirmed - in full, before payment, with no hidden step - rather than stating a figure. Do not treat any price on the live site as confirmed until this clause is updated with it.

5Cancelling

You can cancel at any time. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not refund the period you are already in, and you keep access until that period ends.

  • Cancelling takes no more steps than joining did. If joining was one page and one click to pay, cancelling is one page and one click to stop - not a phone call, not a retention conversation you have to get through first.
  • Cancel from your account settings, or by emailing [email protected] if the account control is not yet built - we action an email cancellation the same day and confirm it in writing.
  • You will also receive a plain confirmation once cancellation is processed, stating the date access ends.

6Your right to change your mind

Because this is a service rather than physical goods, the Consumer Contracts Regulations give you 14 days from joining to cancel for any reason and get a full refund - but only if you have not started using the membership. If we grant access straight away and you use it, you are asking us to begin the service immediately and you are accepting that this shortens or removes that right, to the extent you have actually used what you paid for. We will always make clear when you are agreeing to that, at the point you agree to it, rather than assume it.

7What we can end or change

We can suspend or end a membership for a genuine breach of Online Safety & Moderation, for non-payment, or where we reasonably believe the account was obtained on a false identity. Where we end a paid membership for reasons that are not your fault, we refund the unused part of your current period.

We can change these terms. Where a change is material, we tell members by email before it takes effect and give a reasonable opportunity to cancel first, rather than treating continued payment as silent agreement.

8Content and conduct

What you may post, discuss and do as a member, and what happens when that is broken, is set out in Online Safety & Moderation, which forms part of these terms.

9Nothing here is a promise of income

Membership gives access to content, mentorship and a network. Nothing said in these terms, on the public site, or by a member of our team is a guarantee, promise or representation of any specific financial outcome, income or result. What you make of the access is down to your own effort, market and decisions, and we do not claim otherwise.
